Lake Aulangonjärvi is located only 5 km away from the centre of Hämeenlinna. The lake was formed when the surface level of Lake Vanajavesi was lowered by a total of three metres in the 19th and 20th centuries. Surrounded by old park forests, the water body is great for shore fishing, as the majority of its shoreline is uninhabited, with only the north-west corner of the lake having permanent habitation. The lake is surrounded by hiking trails, the landscapes of which range from lush herb-rich forests to stark cliff faces.
Aulangonjärvi’s native fish species include typical lake fish, namely pike and perch. In addition to these, the lake is stocked with rainbow trout and whitefish. Rainbow trout is stocked three times a year, including in the winter, which is somewhat unusual. The lake is used as a venue for an annual rainbow trout ice fishing competition. After the competition, rainbow trout can be ice fished freely. Net fishing is prohibited in the area during this period.
The most popular method for ice fishing rainbow trout is to use a tip-up. There are many ways to make a tip-up, but the simplest is to attach a weight to the line at a distance of approximately 30 cm from the hook. Bait types used include different pastes and prawns. The fishing rod is placed on a rack positioned by the edge of a hole in the ice and then you simply wait. The reel should have some unspooled line ready so that the rainbow trout has time to swallow the bait before the line goes taut. You need a fishing permit to fish with a tip-up. Spoon lures, such as JK-Uistin’s small, lightened trout lure and the legendary Räsänen Seven, have also proven effective for rainbow trout ice fishing.
