Lake Kuohijärvi is located in Lammi in the city of Hämeenlinna. It has 116 km of coastline and a water area of 35 km2. Kuohijärvi has a maximum depth of 33 m and an average depth of approximately 9.6 m. The lake’s ecological status has been deemed to be excellent. Fish species found in the lake include perch, trout, vendace, whitefish, bream, pike-perch and eel. Signal crayfish is also abundant. Kuohijärvi boasts clear waters and its topography is quite varied, as the lake is intersected by underwater eskers. As such, the lake boasts plenty of appealing underwater sandbanks for fishers who are into jigging, as well as sandy bottom areas for those interested in angling for whitefish. You might even catch some trout by trolling on top of the lake’s basins. Effective lures for catching trout include Kosto Dooris and Janke Vänkyrä.
Kuohijärvi is not all open water, however. The lake has 27 islands with a combined surface area of 21 km2. Over ten of these islands are part of the Hietasalo recreation area maintained by Hämeen Virkistysalueyhdistys. The largest island is Hietasalo, which has an area of 34 hectares. Hietasalo has four campsites with campfire circles. The main campsite is located on the west shore of the island, opposite the Hietasalon portti beach on the mainland, which includes a car park, an info board and a boat launching spot. The main campsite also has a public beach, a pier, a dry toilet and a camping area.
The island group of Pukaluodot off the shores of the island of Kaituri is part of the underwater esker intersecting Kuohijärvi. Kaituri has a campfire circle and a nice sandy beach. Kaituri consists of lush, herb-rich esker forest.
